Heads turned as Shane Hmiel navigated his way through the crowded pits in his wheelchair at Bristol Motor Speedway last month.
Some fans remembered the face and some knew the famous racing pedigree. Few people know the actual story of Hmiel’s grueling road to recovery and redemption.
This son of former NASCAR engineer and crew chief Steve Hmiel was once considered one of hottest young drivers in the sport.
After making waves in the Goody’s Dash, truck and Xfnity series, Hmiel was preparing to make the big jump to Sprint Cup racing when he was banned from NASCAR in 2006 after failing three drug tests.
Hmiel then faced a 10 percent chance of survival in 2010 after being involved in a nightmarish crash during USAC qualifying at a track in Terre Haute, Indiana. Hmiel survived after being placed in a medically induced coma to minimize brain swelling, but he was left paralyzed.
